Meet ASID’s new CEO

The Australasian Society for Infectious Diseases (ASID) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Irene Kourtis as Chief Executive Officer, commencing 9 September 2024.

Dr Kourtis has a background in microbiology and completed a PhD in virology at Burnet Institute and RMIT University, and previously worked at the Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory. She is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and holds a Graduate Diploma in Intellectual Property Law.

Dr Kourtis has leadership experience in many health, lifescience and member based organisations. She helped establish the International Forensic and Clinical Toxicology Association which represents clinicians, scientists and other members. Irene has held various executive appointments including CEO of Neuroscience Trials Australia, the Australian Genome Research Facility, and COO of the Australian Academy of Science, Technology and Engineering.

“Dr Kourtis’s experience will help ASID cement its position as the peak professional body for infectious diseases and clinical microbiology in Australasia; further develop our strategy; and most importantly support all ASID members in their endeavours,” said ASID President Professor Joe Doyle.

I am excited to join ASID and collaborate with our talented members to strengthen our sector, enhance our impact, and advance the fields of infectious diseases and clinical microbiology. I look forward to meeting many of you in the coming weeks and working collectively to achieve our goals.
