Named in honour of Professor Barrie Marmion, who made distinguished contributions to the control of infectious diseases, most recently hepatitis B and Q fever, to diagnostic medical microbiology, the practice of pathology, and to medical education. This award is open to researchers (particularly emerging researchers) who are full or associate members of ASID, or the Australian Veterinary Association or the New Zealand Veterinary Association. The award will be presented at the Zoonoses Conference.

Each year at the ASID Annual Scientific Meeting, a world-renowned expert in infectious diseases is awarded the honour of presenting the Macfarlane Burnet Oration, named for the Nobel Prize winning Australian virologist Sir Frank Macfarlane Burnet, a pioneer in the fields of virology and immunology.
In recognition of their contribution to the study of infectious diseases and their participation at the ASID ASM, they are granted honorary ASID life membership.

The ASID Board and ASM Committee may approach a First Nations person who has made a significant contribution in the infectious diseases, microbiology or public health field to speak at the ASM. They will be awarded a certificate, travel and accommodation and free registration to the ASM.
